美国时间今早星期二，我们从纽约时报和其他媒体得知四川地震灾区数百名儿童被压在瓦砾下，房屋大面积倒塌，伤亡人数很大。

Dear Larry,
My sister, Cecile , brother-in-law, Simon Newman, and a number of friends are in Shanghai on a private tour.
Cecile called me from Shanghai about 5:30 AM EDT Monday AM ( 5:30 PM Shanghai) to tell me about the devastating
7.9 Richter scale earthquake in Cheng du, Sichuan Province, and that they were all right. She and Simon, her
husband, and several of our other close friends from Washington D.C., Maryland and Tennessee were to have been
on tour staying at hotel in Cheng du this week, this Thursday and Friday. She said major tremors extended north
to Beijing, south to Shanghai, and were felt as far south as Hanoi and Bangkok. This morning, Tuesday morning in
USA we are now just reading in New York Times and on other media about hundreds of children being crushed,
widespread buildings collapsed, many casualties,many thousands of dead and injured. Patrick and his family are
in Thailand to celebrate his father, Eric's, 70th birthday.
As you know we have many friends and relatives in China and Thailand.
At this time our heart and prayers go out to all of you, to the dead ,the injured, the parents, grand parents,
children, and grandchildren.
Please let me know if China needs relief assistance, and we will do our best to help. We sincerely hope and
pray you and your family, and all of our friends at USCF are all right. Please convey our sincere sadness and
condolences to everyone, including various central and provincial government officials.
On the back of the Myamar cyclone disaster this is another Asian tragedy of epic proportions.
We have always been shown nothing but love, kindness, support, and co-operation by our Chinese friends, and we
in the United States feel as though this tragedy has happened to us.
Mary joins me in this message. Our prayers are with China.

We assume that you are all fine, but the pictures from Chengdu and Sichuan are tragic.
We were glad to hear that the Panda habitats were unharmed.
Two such tragedies in such a short time test the fabric of the world. But I have no doubt that China will move
beyond their tragedy to make this the special year that they envision.

Dear Larry:
We have been receiving the news of the terrible earthquake in Sichuan Province and the massive lost of lives which
makes us very sad especially when we see the young school children who died and were injured by the earthquake.
We will do everything possible from here to help the people who suffered from the earthquake so I can tell you that
we have been to the Sing Tao newspaper office to contribute financial support and we are asking our government to
extend all possible assistance to the earthquake victims. So far the US government has agreed to send $500,000 to
assist the victims and I believe much more will be donated when the American people realize the vast damage which
has occurred to our friends in China.
Perhaps you are considering what actions USCF can take to assist the earthquake victims perhaps through the web
site or in some other ways. No doubt you and your team are already doing many things to be helpful to the damaged
people in Sichuan. Let us hope that the number of lives lost will reduced by the quick reaction of the PLA,police
and medical personnel.
Finally I do hope all our USCF colleagues and their families are safe following the earthquake.

The earthquake is an unspeakable tragedy, but China is rising to the challenge as the government's reaction and
leadership has been excellent in every respect. I believe that this is tremendously comforting to the victims and
to everyone else. I have been calling friends from Sichuan and checking the map and news reports regarding their
hometowns throughout the day.
Our hearts go out to all of those affected, especially to those who have lost family members. They are in our
